Walvis Bay is Namibia’s largest commercial port receiving approximately 3,000 vessel calls each year and handling around 5 million tonnes of cargo which is below the ports capacity of 7 to 8 million tonne. This ensures that unlike a lot of other African ports Walvis Bay does not suffer from congestion. As it is a sheltered deepwater harbour which benefits from a temperate climate there are very rarely delays to berthing caused by bad weather.
The container terminal at the port can accommodate ground slots for 3875 containers with provision for 482 reefer container plug points which is very handy as Namibia is a major exporter of beef to Europe.
Walvis Bay is a major transit port for onward delivery to landlocked Southern African countries including Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo amongst others. The port also maintains an extremely high level of security to ensure cargo is secure whilst awaiting collection.
